Mr. Simpson has worked with clients of varying sizes to help develop and leverage patent portfolios that meet the client's business goals.  For instance, he has assisted start-up companies in creating patent portfolios to protect core technology so that the start-up companies could raise funding from outside investors.  Mr. Simpson has also worked extensively with large Fortune 500 companies to create defensive patent portfolios.  A hallmark of Mr. Simpson's approach is tailoring a strategy to the particular client's needs. 

 

Besides helping clients obtain protection for their innovations, Mr. Simpson has also performed due diligence analysis for clients wishing to purchase a patent portfolio from another entity.  He determines the strengths and weaknesses of the patent portfolio according to a number of factors to assist clients in valuating the patent portfolio.  Conversely, Mr. Simpson has also assisted clients that own a patent portfolio in raising funding from outside investors.   

 

Once patent protection is obtained through preparation and prosecution of a patent application or through purchase of a patent, Mr. Simpson can also assist with licensing the technology to develop a royalty stream of revenue for the client.  Mr. Simpson has experience drafting a variety of different types of license agreements.  He tailors the license agreement to the client's specific needs.

 

Mr. Simpson also has extensive experience in assisting clients with clearance studies.  Prior to the client launching a product or service, Mr. Simpson can provide client counseling to determine whether the product or service may infringe a competitor's patent.  Further, he can provide assistance in helping the client develop a design around solution or invalidate the patent at issue.  Mr. Simpson also provides oral and written non-infringement and invalidity opinions.

 

Having a Computer Science technical background, Mr. Simpson's main expertise is in the software, hardware, Internet, business method, and digital media areas.  Further, Mr. Simpson has extensive experience in the gaming technology area, specifically casino and non-casino based games.  In addition, he has experience in a variety of other areas such as mechanical apparatuses and medical devices.
