Mr. Simpson founded Patent Ingenuity in 2006, after having extensive experience as a patent attorney in the “big law firm” environment. His goal was to leverage his knowledge of how a big firm operates into a leaner, more effective patent law firm. Almost 13 years later, Mr. Simpson accomplished just that: a patent law firm with locations in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Jose that emphasizes high quality and quick-turnaround time over big law firm bureaucracy.
Having practiced law for over 17 years as a member of the State Bar of California, Mr. Simpson has developed a deep base of knowledge with which he has used to advise clients. Additionally, Mr. Simpson is a Registered United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) Patent Attorney, and has been registered as such for over 16 years.
Mr. Simpson has vast experience in advising clients on (1) obtaining strong, quality patents; (2) monetizing those patents; and (3) avoiding infringement of the patents of others. He has advised clients ranging across the spectrum, from Startups to Fortune 500 companies.
Of particular note, Mr. Simpson has a software engineering background. He was educated at Cornell University’s College of Engineering, and subsequently earned a J.D. from The George Washington University Law School.
Priding himself on an outside-the-box approach, Mr. Simpson has a philosophy in which he adapts as needed to suit the particular needs of a particular client. He recognizes the need to constantly evolve with the ever-changing technological and legal landscapes of this modern era. As a result, Mr. Simpson has worked closely with clients to “get into the weeds” and really understand their technology from both an engineering and a legal perspective.
Notable Experience:
- Mr. Simpson has obtained over 100 granted patents for clients. As 1 granted patent alone may take years to get granted, this is a notable achievement.
- Also, Mr. Simpson has extensive, in-depth knowledge of how the patent system works. He has prepared and filed hundreds of patents applications, prepared and filed hundreds of Office Action Responses, prepared and filed numerous Appeals to the USPTO Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), and performed hundreds of interviews with USPTO Patent Examiners.
- He has managed patent portfolios for multiple Fortune 500 companies. From harvesting patentable ideas from engineers all the way to patent grant, Mr. Simpson has advised enterprise clients on how to best develop a cohesive patent portfolio to attempt to safeguard not just one idea, but a whole technology space.
- Mr. Simpson has also helped multiple Startups accelerate growth by developing patent portfolios from the ground up. Having advised clients with no, or very few, patents to start with, Mr. Simpson has helped Startups grow through innovation.
- Beyond patent procurement, Mr. Simpson has extensive experience in patent monetization. He has drafted and negotiated numerous license agreements on behalf of clients.
- Also, Mr. Simpson has extensive experience in advising clients on patent avoidance – how to avoid infringing the patents of others. From performing thorough analysis to preparing Freedom to Operate opinion letters, Mr. Simpson has been able to advise clients on how to comfortably proceed with their business, without being concerned about infringing the patent rights of others.
- Given his vast exposure to numerous technology areas, Mr. Simpson has developed a thorough technical understanding of the engineering side of many areas of innovation: software-related (Apps, Mobile Devices, AI, FinTech, Gaming, IoT, etc.) and non-software related (mechanical devices, biomedical devices, etc.).
